Ronald Stanley Ballaam ~ 1920-1940
Known as Ronnie and my maternal uncle. Reported 'Missing presumned dead' after taking part in the Narvic Campaigne, Norway. However, in 2010 after dedicated research by Paul Kiddle and John Benson the whereabouts of Ronnie was finally discovered. We now have a grave to visit...

A special memorial bears the inscription 'known to be buried near this spot'..


William Henry was one of nine children and the eldest child of William Thomas and Rhoda Ward nee Daft. William Thomas had died in 1910 so Rhoda was a widow when she received news of her son William's death in August 1918. If this was not devastating enough 26 days later she received the news that her second eldest child, George, had also died in September 1918. I cannot imagine how this poor mother felt...

Robert Leggott ~ 1882-1918 ~
My husband Andy is Great-Grand Nephew to Robert.
Robert is buried in Forceville Communal Cemetery, France

Sadly Robert died on May 2nd, less than a month later

Around Vintage Cornwall

Hello from sunny Cornwall. Yes the sun is shinning today after some very heavy rain at the begining of the week. Despite a flood warning we were lucky, I'm glad to say, because my kitchen has been flooded at least four times in the past. I live on a slight incline near the end of a steep road so when it rains heavy it can look like a river sometimes....

Talking about the road where I live prompted me to show you how it looked in about 1910. Fortunately for the ones seen in the photograph it wasn't raining.....

As you can see little has changed other than cars have replaced the cattle that once walked down this road. The tree is still there but has grown and thankfully is sturdy because it is opposite from my house. It seems to defy the strong winds that blow and stands proud....

I would like to show you other areas of Hayle as it was in a bygone age, which was then a busy industrial harbour town which was established during the 18th century....
